Our Society was started by a few amateur astronomers from the district who got together via the Stargazers Lounge forum and arranged some local star gazing sessions. Over 6 months numbers swelled, bringing a vast and varied range of personalities, equipment and knowledge of the night sky alongside. The society has continued to go from strength to strength.

We host a number of guest speaker meetings throughout the year during the stargazing season, as well as several public outreach sessions covering both solar and stellar observing.

The society is a member of the Federation of Astronomical Societies, and is governed by a constitution-bound committee with an AGM held annually at which society members may vote on decisions for the forthcoming year.

Closed Facebook Group (1/31/2019) - A hot topic at the AGM this year was communication regarding observing sessions, and generally keeping in touch. Several members found accessing and using SGL confusing / difficult, notably since the discontinuation of support for the Tap-a-Talk app. A discussion amongst the members ensued, and a few proposals were made. After a vote it was decided to form a closed Facebook Group for active members only, due to the convenience of the FB App and integration with most mobile platforms.
